You are joining a team of designers to create a new line of adaptive eveningwear. To make sure you adequately go through the process of line development, begin with inspiration, followed up by sketches, flats, and tech packs.
the brand
Our team initially struggled to come up with a brand name. We knew our customers and our desire for opulence. We knew we were inspired by themes from Baroque art and wanted our line to be elegant, expressive, and evoke confidence. As we were constantly playing with various themes, we finally decided on the name Ponte. Ponte is Italian for bridge, and our line is about bridging the gap between couture and adaptive wear.
who is the customer?
Our customer is a Millenial woman with high disposable income and a desire for experiences that reflect her affluence. She is an upper extremity amputee, however, this doesn’t stop her from trying to emulate the success of other luxurious women such as Kim Kardashian or Rihanna, who she views as aspirational. She values experiential luxury as much as she does high-quality physical items whether it takes the form of museum visits, frequent European travel, or fine dining. She may not come from old money but she values provenance and the old money aesthetic and frequently educates herself on Dutch masters and Renaissance works of art. Typical days for her include luxury pop-up events, trips to the Art Basel Miami, or frequent stops at various Soho House locations.
the sketches
The team worked to create 30 original sketches. These sketches would then be presented to renowned designer Sylvia Heisel to be condensed into 8 refined sketches. I was very proud when two of my designs were picked for the final 8. Those designs are the wide-leg green pant look and the oversized blazer look. Both of my designs consisted of removable sleeves to allow our customers to choose how they would like to wear their garments. I was inspired to play with an oversized silhouette and add delicate features such as jewels, pearls, mesh, and tulle for contrast.
the flats
For the flats, I was able to take a leading role. The flats were created to show more fine details of the sketches using Adobe Illustrator. Check out the completed collection below!
